Vague as if we never were

A madness of buttercups

Flanked your desertion

Our lives burned over

Your joy is valid

The Sea as We Left It

Duck, NC

Maybe the beach again the sand and the sea

others will be there waiting for us

maybe November is far enough away

to make it seem possible to think it will be as it was

unchanged as it was and constantly changing

the cries of gulls in the wind and the smell

the fecund smell of salt and decay

others will be there where we left them

awaiting our return as it once was

the wind and the sky and the absences

the collapsing surf the cry of the gulls

the rhythmic collapse and the sighs

of the sea receding and the relentless wind

 everything changing and unchanged

in the great absences

in the cry and collapse

of the off-season

others will be waiting

as they once were.
